The Hidden Energy Tax
If you're consistently tracking low energy levels, the explanation probably isn't that you need more coffee or more willpower. Neurodivergent people face energy demands that are largely invisible — to others and often to themselves.
A neurotypical person walking through a shopping centre is navigating a space. An autistic person walking through the same centre is simultaneously processing fluorescent lighting, filtering dozens of overlapping conversations, managing unpredictable movement from other people, monitoring their own facial expressions, and suppressing the urge to cover their ears. They arrive home having spent energy on an entirely different scale, for the same apparent activity.
Where the energy actually goes
Masking — the single biggest energy drain for many autistic people. Monitoring your tone, suppressing stims, maintaining eye contact, timing your responses in conversation, performing interest in small talk — each of these draws from a finite pool. A single meeting can consume more energy than hours of focused solo work.
Executive function — for ADHD brains, initiating tasks, switching between tasks, holding instructions in working memory, and resisting distractions all require conscious effort that neurotypical brains handle more automatically. The mental overhead of organising a basic day can be exhausting before any actual work begins.
Sensory processing — filtering, interpreting, and responding to sensory input consumes processing power. When stimuli are intense, novel, or unpredictable, the energy cost escalates. Background noise that a neurotypical colleague doesn't even register can be steadily draining your battery throughout the day.
Emotional processing — neurodivergent emotional experiences are often more intense and take longer to process. A brief conflict at work might occupy cognitive and emotional resources for hours or days afterward.
Frameworks That Help
Spoon theory
Originally developed for chronic illness, spoon theory resonates strongly with neurodivergent people. You start each day with a limited number of "spoons" (units of energy), and every activity costs some. The key insight: activities that cost neurotypical people one spoon might cost you three or four. Planning your day around your actual spoon count — not an idealised version — is the foundation of sustainable energy management.
Energy accounting
A more detailed version of spoon theory. For one week, track not just what you do but how much energy each activity costs and how much recovery time you need afterward. You might discover that:
- A 30-minute video call costs as much energy as 2 hours of solo coding
- Grocery shopping requires a 45-minute decompression period afterward
- One day of office work needs an entire evening of minimal-demand recovery
- Certain people or environments are net energy drains regardless of the activity
This isn't about avoiding everything that costs energy. It's about making informed choices and building in recovery before you're depleted.
The battery model
Think of your energy as a phone battery with some quirks:
- It doesn't charge to 100% every night (especially with poor sleep)
- Some apps drain it faster than expected (masking, sensory overload)
- Background processes run constantly (anxiety, executive function overhead)
- Fast-charging exists but doesn't last (caffeine, hyperfocus bursts)
- Operating on low battery degrades performance across everything
Practical Strategies
Audit your energy drains
Look at your tracking data for patterns. When energy is lowest, what happened in the preceding 24 hours?
- High-masking social situations
- Poor or disrupted sleep
- Sensory overload (crowded places, loud environments)
- Multiple task-switching demands
- Unstructured time requiring constant self-direction
- Conflict or emotionally charged interactions
Build recovery into your schedule
Don't wait until you crash. If you know Tuesdays involve back-to-back meetings, block Wednesday morning for low-demand recovery. If a family event is happening at the weekend, keep Friday evening clear.
Recovery looks different for everyone:
- Solo time in a quiet, controlled environment
- Engaging with a special interest (this generates energy for many neurodivergent people)
- Gentle physical movement — walks, stretching, swimming
- Reducing sensory input — dim lights, noise-cancelling headphones, comfortable textures
- Sleep or rest without a time pressure
Reduce unnecessary energy costs
Some energy expenditure is unavoidable. But some can be eliminated or reduced:
- Automate decisions — meal planning, outfit selection, and routine choices can be systematised to eliminate daily executive function costs.
- Batch similar tasks — context-switching is expensive. Group emails together, group calls together, group errands together.
- Communicate your needs — telling a colleague "I work best with questions in writing rather than drop-by conversations" reduces both social masking and unexpected interruptions.
- Say no strategically — every commitment that doesn't serve your wellbeing is borrowing energy from something that does.
Match tasks to energy levels
Not all hours are equal. Many ADHD people have a window of peak cognitive function (often mid-morning or late evening) and a post-lunch trough. Schedule demanding work for high-energy periods and routine or enjoyable tasks for low-energy ones. Fighting your natural rhythm wastes energy on the fight itself.
Energy as a Leading Indicator
Energy doesn't just affect how much you get done — it affects everything else. Low energy makes sensory input harder to tolerate, emotions harder to regulate, focus harder to maintain, and masking more costly. When you see energy dropping in your tracking, treat it as an early warning system rather than something to push through.
The goal isn't to have unlimited energy. It's to spend the energy you have on things that matter and to stop the hidden leaks that drain you before you've even started your day.
